Game Recap - Fish Treat Bandits to Wanigan Days Blowout

The St. Croix River Bandits just cannot put a competitive game together vs. the Fighting Fish of River Falls. The Fish thumped the Bandits for the 2nd game of the season, scoring six of their ten runs in the first three innings of the game. Will Ball struggled on the hill walking three and hitting three and letting up only three hits. The free passes led to six early runs, a deficit the Bandits could not overcome.

The Bandits managed only six hits, two coming off the bat of catcher Steve Siqueiros, including his ninth inning homerun, the 2nd homerun of his career.

Game Recap - Bandits Escape with a Victory at Hager City.

The St. Croix River Bandits dominating performance turned into a thriller July 11th vs. the Hager City Skeeters, and that with everyone's favorite HC establishment closed for the day of rest.

The Bandits struck first in the top of the third inning. Gus Koecher and Cory Gebhard reached on a single and a walk with one out in the inning. Matt Vold and Steve Siqueiros followed with RBI-singles. Adam Lewis then grounded into a fielder's choice, but the defense could not get the speedy Vold at third base - loading the bases with only one out. The Skeeters were able to get out of the jam by striking out both Kyle Kahl and Scott Lindholm to end the inning. The Bandits managed four hits over the next three innings, but could not get runs across the plate.

The Skeeters were having an equally difficult time at the dish. Trevor Todd, the Bandits starting pitcher, pitched seven strong innings allowing only four hits and scattering five walks, while picking off three.

The Bandits added another run in the top of the seventh and top of the eighth to increase their lead to 4-0.

As the eighth inning started the winds started picking up and the sky darkened. Relief pitcher Matt Vold, pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, putting the Skeeters down in order. Vold remained in the game in the ninth inning, looking to pick up the two-inning save. Light rain started to fall and the wind started to gust hard. The only sounds you could hear was the wind and yellow dog whining in the dugout.

Vold started the inning by clipping the lead-off batter, Henry Jaeger, in the kneecap. Jaegar then stole second base and Tyler Regnier singled, getting Jaeger to third base. Vold threw a wild pitch, scoring Jaeger, and walked Elliot Foley, putting runners on second and first with no outs. By now the winds were really whipping and the rain was coming down harder - the sky was near black. Vold's 1-1 pitch the Chase Melstrom was skied to left field.....and never came down. Melstrom hit a game-tying 3-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth.

The Bandits opted to take Vold out of the game and insert Adam Lewis. The rain started coming down extremely hard, to the point where the game can no longer continue...Lewis gets in one pitch on the batter, and the game is paused for a rain delay.

The game picked up about an hour later, after much conversation about what we were going to do, and field maintenance-removing the water from the mound and batters box.

We jump back into action with the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth with no outs. Lewis induces Frazier to ground out. But then gives up back to back singles to Lance Murphy and Chad Melstrom. Lewis strikes out Kyle Lemler for the second out but then walks Ross Sweig to load the bases. Lewis then reached a full count on Jaeger - where a walk would end the game. Jaeger fouled off about three full-count pitches before finally swinging and missing on strike three, ending the Bandits mini-meltdown.

Mike VanderPlas led the tenth inning off with a walk, and bas sacrificed over by Will Ball. VanderPlas reached third on a passed ball during Gus Koecher's plate appearance where was was hit by a pitch. With runners on third and first the Bandits could not convert, popping out in the infield for their next two outs ending the threat.

The Bandits jumped back in the top of the 11th inning. Siqueiros struck out to start the inning, and Adam Lewis walked. Kyle Kahl then struck out. Adam Lewis reached second base on a failed pickoff attempt during Scott Lindholm's at bat. Lindholm hit a sharp single, getting Lewis to third base. Lewis was able to score on a wild pitch, advancing Lindholm to second. Michael VanderPlas then lit up the scorebook with the rare strikeout-wild pitch, reaching first base, and getting Lindholm to third. Will Ball was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gus Koecher opened the game up with a two-run RBI single, giving the Bandits a 7-4, which they would leave the inning with.

Lewis slammed the door on the Skeeters in the bottom of the 11th, striking out the side.

This was a game that was somehow close but not, the Skeeters battled throughout, but only showed glimpses of offense in the torrential storm that brewed in the bottom of the ninth, and when the storm passed, so did their presence at the plate. Twelve hits on the day for the Bandits and eights walks. The Banditos are still leaving too many men on base. Outstanding pitching performance by Trevor Todd who pads his pickoff numbers by three.

Game Balls
so many to choose from - some good performance today

2. Trevor Todd: 7IP, 4H, 8K, 5BB, oR

3. Adam Lewis: 3IP, 2H, 6K, 1BB, oR

WoW Play of the Game:

Besides the awful game-tying HR...there was this: Bottom of the 4th inning - Skeeters Tyler Regnier singles and steals second and third base. Chase Melstrom hits a 1-out sacrifice fly to RF Will Ball. Regnier readies for a tag as Ball gets set to catch the flyball. He catches the flyball and Regnier bolts home. Ball unleashes the power of a sonic boom on his throw to the plate, delivering a perfect strike to catcher Steve Siqueiros, to steal a run away from the Skeeters, and get the third out of the inning.

Unheralded Hero(es) of the Game:

To Jim Rochford's heroic efforts in finding nourishment for his depleted (both morally and physically) team during the rain delay, and then following that up with some casual fashion display as the third base coach...."just trying to keep everyone loose," he says.

Game Recap: Menomonie comes back vs. Bandits

The River Bandits broke out an early 2-0 versus the Menomonie Eagles on Saturday, July 10th at SCF. Nick Johnson and Gus Koecher led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and double, with Koecher's double scoring Johnson. Koecher stole third base and then was able to beat out the throw to home and a Matt Vold fielder's choice.

Jim Rochford started on the hill for the Bandits and had a decent outing. Rochford scattered three hits through the first three innings. Rochford ran into trouble in the fourth inning after issuing a one-out walk to Luke Welch, Cory Hastings hit a 1-1 curveball out of the park, tying the score at two a piece. Rochford pitched a solid fifth inning before hitting a brick wall in the sixth.

Luke Welch reached on an error and then Rochford walked Hastings on four straight pitches. Ned Welch then sac bunted the runners over to second and third base. Rochford then walked the next two batters, walking in a run. Will Ball came in relief and was able to strikeout Andy Lorenzen for the second out of the inning. Luke Schultz came through for the Eagles, hitting a bases clearing double with two outs. The Bandits were able to get Schultz out as he was trying to stretch a double into a triple for the final out of the inning.

The Eagles added another run to pad their lead in the top of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly by Cory Hastings.

Nick Johnson started a two-out rally for the Bandits in the bottom of the seventh inning by drawing a walk. Gus Koecher followed with a single, and a throwing error allowed each runner to advance a base. Matt Vold then hit a single, knocking in RBIs number two and three for the day. Steve Siqueiros drew walk to put runner on second and first base. The Eagles were able to get out of the inning after a Michael VanderPlas hot-shot to third base, well fielded by Luke Welch, was thrown out at first.

The Bandits had baserunners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth inning but could not get the runs across, dropping the game by a score of 7-4.

The Bandits had eight hits and drew six walks, but left too many runners on the base paths. Rochford pitched well up to the sixth inning where he disassembled at the limbs. Maybe three times through the lineup should be his max. I'm not saying the the Bandits should have won this game, I'm saying that they could have. The big inning strikes again.

Game Recap: Osceola Downs Bandits 7 - 4

Okay, so I'm back from sabbatical to recap the last near month's worth of games. On July 7th the Bandits took on the Osceola Braves in Osceola. Trevor Todd started on the mound for the Bandits, his 2nd start against the Braves in the 2010 season.

The Braves started off strong, loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning with only one out. Todd was able to wriggle out of the jam with a strikeout and a force out a third base. However, the Bandits would not be so lucky in the bottom of the second inning. Todd issued a leadoff walk, followed by a sac bunt, and a hit batsman. Braves CF Pete Droher hit a scorching line drive double to the right center gap, scoring two. Trent Fehlin singled in Droher on the next pitch giving the Braves an early 3-0 lead.

The Braves notched another run in the bottom of the third inning. Ross Benitz singled and was moved over to second base on a passed ball. Chris Kopp hit a one-out RBI single to drive in the run.

The Bandits had baserunners in each of the first four innings, but hit into two doubleplays, and failed to get a man past second base.

The Bandits scored their first two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning, with a little help of the Braves pitching and defensive staff. Kyle Kahl led the inning off with a four pitch walk. Two strikeouts later, Michael Chelberg was able to draw a walk with a full count, putting runners at first and second base. Matt Vold then singled to right field. Braves RF Ryan Rybicki threw a bullet to the plate and catcher Ryan Rugg tried to tag Kahl out as he was charging home. There was a major collision at the plate, Kahl was in safely to score the Bandits first run, but Rugg was still down. After a couple of minutes of attention, Rugg was able to regain himself, and continued on, to the relief of everyone involved. The Bandits scored again when Gus Koecher grounded to shortstop Dave Measner. Measner was unable to field the ball, allowing Koecher to get to first safely and score Chelberg from 3rd base. Steve Siqueiros then popped out, with runners on first and second base, to end the threat. Braves lead 4-2.

The Bandits brought Will Ball in for Trevor Todd in the bottom of the sixth inning, after Todd walked the leadoff batter. Ball struggled immediately out of the gate. Ball walked the first batter before getting a flyball out. Ball then walked the next batter, and Ryan Rybicki hit an RBI single, scoring just one Brave, and leaving the bases loaded. Ball was able to get Ryan Rugg to ground into a 3-2-3 doubleplay to end the inning. Braves lead was now 5-2.

The Bandits staff continued to struggled with control going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Ball hit Benitz with a pitch and then walked Dakota Belter. Ball then was able to get two consecutive outs, before facing red-hot leadoff hitter Pete Droher. Droher laced the first pitch he saw for a double to left center, scoring two more Braves, giving the Braves a 7-2 lead after seven innings of play.

The Bandits tried to rally in the eighth inning Adam Lewis singled to lead off the inning. Braves starter Mark Zurbriggen was able to get Nick Johnson to ground out, and struck out Michael Chelberg. Matt Vold then walked, and Gus Koecher hit an RBI-single, scoring Lewis, and getting Vold to third base. Vold would later score on a passed ball, but that is all the Bandits would get in the eighth.

Zurbriggen was able to strike out the side in the top of the ninth inning to shut the door on the Bandits.

The Bandits were kept off balance all evening by the Braves pitching, getting only six hits which were scattered over nine innings of work. The Bandits pitching staff accuracy was off the mark issuing twelve walks. The Braves Pete Droher finished 2-4 with 2 doubles, a walk, and 4RBI. The two outs he did make were scorching line-drive flyouts to the outfield.

GAME BALLS

1. Matt Vold: 3-3, R, BB, RBI

2. Kyle Kahl: 0-2, R, BB, HP, solid D, intense baserunning.

3. Gus Koecher: 1-4, RBI

WOW Play of the Day: The Kyle Kahl mauling of Braves catcher Ryan Rugg. The Bandits scored their first run of the game, making it a 4-1 game. The Braves and Braves fans were none to pleased with Kahl's decision to spear tackle Rugg at the plate. But in Kahl's defense, Rugg was blocking the plate, did not yet have the ball as Kahl dove, and its a completely legal play. I am glad Rugg did not get hurt, no one is looking to injure anyone else out here. Change the rules if people aren't pleased with home plate collisions, otherwise, let's play ball.

Unheralded Hero(es) of the Game:
Great fan support at the Braves field, thanks for coming out and being great athletic supporters fans!

Things heard on and off the Field:

Game Recap - Bandits can't scratch across winning run in loss to Bulldogs

The St Croix River Bandits (2-6, 4-11) took on the Chisago Bulldogs (2 weeks ago, sorry about the non-updated-ness) in a cross river rivalry. The game was scoreless until the 5th inning when the Bandits look a 1-0 lead. Michael Chelberg was hit by a pitch and stole 2nd base. Gus Koecher then hit an RBI double to get Chelberg home. Matt Vold threw the first five innings for the Bandits and had a stellar performance. Vold let up 0 runs, 0 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4.

The Bulldogs came back in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Bandits inserted pitcher Adam Lewis into the game and Bulldogs finally caught some breaks. Cory Berquist singled, followed by an errant pickoff attempt got him all the way around to third base. Berquist scored on a wild pitch. Joey Reed singled with 1 out and stole 2nd base. Reed reached 3rd base after two consecutive walks, then finally scoring on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Henderson. Lewis was able to strike out Joe Johnson to end the inning.

Lewis allowed three consecutive hits to start the 7th inning, but was able to strikeout the next two batters, and was able to pick off a runner sprinting home to steal homeplate during an apparent suicide squeeze play that ran afoul.

The Bandits were inept at the plate versus Chisago pitcher Ryan Picotte. Picotte went the distance, allowing inly 4 hits. Adam Lewis drew a walk with one out in the 9th inning and was pinch ran for by Cory Gebhard. Gebhard stole 2nd base, to get the tying run in scoring position with only 1 out. Picotte settled himself down, striking out Ben Anderson and getting Michael Chelberg to ground out for the final out of the game.

"It was a good game, a non-conference game. We tried to get everyone in and did a pretty good job of that. We only had 4 hits, which isn't going to be enough to win you a baseball game. Their defense made plays, and we had one bad inning that cost us in the end. But we need to hit the ball better, this team isn't built to win many 1-0 baseball games. This is also the 5th game we have lost by 1 run this year. If we win those games our record is 4-4, and overall record is 9-6. We have to start finding ways to win in these close ball games."

WOW Play of the Game:

I thought it was with the bases loaded and 1 out in the 8th inning. Adam Lewis throws from the windup and the runner on third base breaks for home. Lewis throws the ball a little off the strike zone, and I'm not even sure the batter tried to bunt the ball. Either way, he pulled back taking the pitch and all catcher Steve Siqueiros has to do is stand up and tag the runner. The runner didn't even try to get back to 3rd base, just slowed down and let Siqueiros apply the tag. Thanks buddy.
